Background to SVS
Stopping Violence Services (Christchurch) Incorporated has been in operation in the Canterbury region of New Zealand since 1984 and was originally established as Anger Management for Men.
SVS is affiliated to the National Network of Stopping Violence Services and has strong links to the National Collective of Independent Women's Refuges.
Services are available both from the organisation's offices at Level 3, 160 Manchester Street, Christchurch, and at Rangiora High School, and are provided for both groups and individuals, using essentially the same specialised programme.
In addition, SVS provides community education, development, liaison and training in Stopping Violence work. Services contracted include:
- Individual and group programmes for self-referred men,
- Individual and group programmes for young men (in general aged between 13 and early 20s),
- An educational group therapy programme for partners of men who are violent.
- Individual and group programmes for women who are aware that their behaviour is harmful to others.
